Live Rosin vs. Live Resin vs. Sauce: What's the Difference?

All three start with fresh-frozen cannabis. Live rosin is made without any solvent: the frozen flower is washed in ice water, the trichome heads are collected as hash, and the hash is pressed with heat and pressure. Live resin is made by running the frozen flower through a hydrocarbon solvent that is then purged out. Sauce is a texture of live resin: terpene-rich liquid with THCa crystals in it, and it is what goes into a sauce cart.

First, the word they share

“Live” means fresh-frozen

Most cannabis is dried and cured before it is processed, and the most volatile terpenes leave with the water. A live product comes from plants frozen within hours of harvest, so the extract tastes like the plant did on the day it came down. Rosin and resin are both made this way; the word says nothing about the solvent.

Fresh-frozen flower goes into ice water and is stirred so the trichome heads snap off. The water is poured through a stack of mesh screens that catch the heads by size; the best sizes become the hash. That hash is freeze-dried, packed into a fine mesh bag, and pressed between heated plates. What flows out is rosin. Nothing touches it but water, ice, screens, heat and pressure.

It is the most labour-intensive extract to make and the lowest-yielding, which is why it costs the most per gram. It is also the closest thing to the living plant you can put in a rig. This is HeadChange's flagship, and it is what we mean when we say we are hashmakers.

Fresh-frozen flower is packed into a closed-loop column and washed with a cold hydrocarbon solvent, usually butane, propane or a blend. The solvent dissolves the cannabinoids and terpenes and leaves the plant material behind. It is then evaporated off in a vacuum oven until the residual solvent is below the limit Missouri tests for.

Because the solvent pulls more of the plant's cannabinoids, live resin yields more and often tests a little higher in THC than rosin from the same flower. It can be finished as sugar, badder, diamonds or sauce depending on how it is handled after extraction. HeadChange never uses colour remediation (CRC) to lighten a dark run; what you see is what the plant gave.

Leave freshly extracted live resin alone for a while under the right conditions and it separates on its own: THCa forms crystals, and the terpenes and minor cannabinoids settle into a liquid around them. That wet, glittering mix is sauce. Because the terpenes are concentrated in the liquid, sauce is the loudest-tasting of the three.

A sauce cart is that live resin, gently warmed and homogenised so the crystals dissolve back into the terpenes and it flows through a 510 cartridge or an all-in-one. It is not distillate with terpenes added back; it is the whole extract in a cart.

Which one should I buy?

Pick by what you care about

Flavour first, and you dab at home: live rosin. Run it low-temperature and you will taste the cultivar, not the process.
Potency per dollar: live resin. More cannabinoids come out of the same flower, and the price reflects it.
Loudest terpenes, or you want it in a cart: sauce. A sauce cart is live resin you can carry; a Live Rosin Cart is the solventless equivalent.
You avoid solvents on principle: live rosin is the only one of the three that never meets one.

Why does live rosin cost more?

Yield and labour. Only a fraction of the trichomes on a plant are the right size to wash and press, so a pound of flower makes far less rosin than resin, and the washing, drying and pressing are done by hand in small batches. You are paying for the flower it took and the hours it took.

What does 'live' mean on a label?

That the plant was frozen at harvest instead of dried and cured. Freezing locks in the volatile terpenes that otherwise evaporate during drying, which is why live products smell and taste like the plant did the day it came down. It applies to both rosin and resin.

Are there solvents left in live resin?

Not at a level Missouri allows on a shelf. Every batch of live resin is tested for residual solvents by a state-licensed lab before it can be sold, and the result is on the certificate of analysis. Live rosin skips the question entirely because no solvent is ever used.
